Remote Work:                The Personality Test

Even though it’s becoming more and more common for people to ditch the regular 9 to 5 lifestyle to work remotely, it’s still a bit of a foreign concept to a lot of people and can take a bit of an adjustment once you’ve made the leap into the world of being a Digital Nomad.

If you’ve been thinking about working remotely, there are a few things you should consider before jumping in. The most important thing to consider is whether or not you’re equipped with the proper temperament and personality traits for this type of lifestyle.

To make it easier for you, I’ve created a check list of 5 qualities that go hand in hand with living and working remotely.

1- Self Discipline:

Do you have oodles of this? You’re going to need it.  When you work remotely you are giving up a lot of the structure we’ve become used to in the regular 9 to 5 world.  You no longer have to be anywhere at any given time, you don’t have to punch a clock anymore, and although it sounds pretty dreamy (and let’s face it, it is) it can take a bit of adjusting to. If you are going to be successful working remotely you’re going to need have a lot of self discipline and great time management skills-- what’s the saying? With great freedom comes great responsibility? Close enough.

2- Flexibility:

If you’re working on a remote team with people spread across different time zones you’re going to need to be flexible with your time in order to stay connected with the team leadership. Although it is often possible to stay in a routine you must always keep the mentality of staying available to communicate with teammates who are living somewhere distant from you.

3: Communication:

Communication skills are KEY. You have to be a good communicator if you’re planning on working remotely. If you think you’re communicating too much, you probably should be doing it more. When you’re not able to look into someone’s eye and speak with them face to face it can be difficult to know if you’re getting your point across clearly and it’s much easier for things to be misinterpreted or missed completely. Keep your lines of communication wide open and don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions, get detailed, and constantly clarify what you’re saying- it’ll pay off in the long run when fewer mistakes are made.

4: The Ability to “Roll With It”:

When you’re working remotely you might be moving locations. Whether from coworking space to coffee shop or you might be moving farther than that. on the road and travelling to new places it’s likely things aren’t always going to go the way you hoped. Learn to roll with the punches and not get flustered. Did your wifi drop? Take a deep breath and figure it out- there’s always a solution. It may not be the most convenient thing, but remember- you’re on an adventure and this is all a part of it. You signed up to do things on you own when you ditched the 9-5 so be prepared to not have someone in the cubicle next to you to fix it.

5: You’re Going to Want to Post Up, Not Bounce:
There’s a reason why schedules and structures help. So find that place that works for you. You have enough stress in your job or figuring out this new working remotely thing. Don’t add to it by having to move every few hours with a coffee shop that you feel awkward being at for a long time
